Dice & Tile Game, 2-7 Players, Ages 8+ by Rio Grande Games Roasted worms are a bird’s delight. On the one hand this is due to the fact that worms are the favourite dish of all poultry. On the other hand,
the preference for barbecue worms is nobody else’s doing but of Johnny Rooster Roaster. His Uncle Sam, a native from Chickentown Kentucky, had the idea to open up a worm roasting house at each corner of town. Johnny didn’t hesitate to make this idea a reality and since their first days as wormbarbecue masters their roasting joints have found no lack of eager and famished customers. +++++++++++++ Counter Review +++++++++++++ 2-7 players, 45 minutes designed by Reiner Knizia reviewed by Ben Baldanza Heckmeck (aka Pickomino) is the newest addition to the small-box ``Chicken series\'\' from Zoch. Whether or not this started as a series is questionable, but it undoubtedly is now. There are no cards in this version, nor any chickens other than on the box cover either. The game is about collecting the most worms from the barbeque grill, and these are represented on 16 mah-jongg type tiles numbered 21 through 36. The higher numbers have more worms, while the lower numbers have just one. You get worms from the grill by rolling eight dice. These are normal dice except that the ``six\'\' has been replaced with a worm. On turn, a player rolls all the dice and they select all of a single value showing. The remaining dice can then be re-rolled and another value extracted, but once a value is taken it cannot be chosen again. For example, if I roll one worm, three 5\'s, two 2\'s, and two 4\'s, I likely would save the three fives and re-roll the others. At this point, though, I cannot take another five. Worms are worth five points in the totaling, and the dice roll is summed to match the number on a barbeque tile. That tile is removed from the grill and placed in front of the individual, who then passes the dice to the next player. Importantly, however, at least one worm must appear in the ending dice display in order to take any tile. As the game progresses, tiles in front of players can be taken if the dice roll matches. Thus if I roll 30, it may be best to stop rather than roll for a higher value tile if the leading player has the 30 tile open in front of them. Tiles taken by players stack, so that over time numbers get hidden and thus unavailable for taking unless revealed by taking the higher-stacked tile. If a tile number cannot be matched exactly, the next lowest showing tile can be taken. No tile can be taken if the player rolls lower than the lowest value tile showing. If this happens, then the player must return their top tile to the grill, and flip over the highest value tile still there. The game plays until all the tiles are taken or flipped, and the player with the most total worms on their tiles wins the game. The game devolves into the dice rolls and what to do with them. Take the two fives or hope to re-roll more fives later? Take this one worm now with dice dwindling, or take the single four and hope for worms on the next roll? Stop short to take a tile from an opponent, or go for the gusto and the four-worm tile still on the grill? It\'s fun to play, but not very exciting and the ``steal a tile\'\' aspect makes it last longer than it should. As a result, this filler will fill your game shelf more than your game table.
