Board Game, 2-4 Players, Ages 10+ by Face2Face Games The time is 250 million years ago, the place is the super-continent Pangaea. A devastated Earth has just undergone its greatest extinction and now Pangaea itself is splitting up. But this is
not the end, it is a new beginning. In Genesis you play the part of great reptiles, dangerous dinosaurs, powerful mammals or cunning man establishing yourself in the new ecosystems on the barren earth as you strive for world dominance. ++++++++++++ Counter review ++++++++++++ 2-4 players, 30 minutes designed by Reiner Knizia reviewed by Ben Baldanza The man is simply amazing. Is it because he keeps putting out new games, recycling concepts, flipping between games for kids or adults, or he just dreams better than most? Whatever the reason, Knizia can do more with less, more often, than any other game designer. Genesis is a great example of this. The game plays simply and the ideas are simple, yet it feels original even though many who play it will think that they could have designed it in about 30 minutes. But they didn\'t, and he did. The board is a simple grid and the game includes tiles with four species in four colors: reptiles, dinosaurs, mammals, and man. Ignoring the scientific understanding that these four never roamed all together, each player takes a role and gets tiles of their type in four colors representing forest, wetland, savannah, and mountains. Twenty-two spots on the 140-space grid are blocked by volcanoes or tar pits - the type doesn\'t matter, it just means that tiles can\'t be placed there. The game also includes two dice (dice?!), with six sides showing one each of the four land types and two ``any land\'\' sides. The turn reminds one of Through the Desert, except with a dice role. The dice are rolled, and two tiles are added to the board. That\'s it, but of course where the tiles are placed makes all the difference. As tiles are placed, areas of similar land style will develop and players score for having the largest herds inside this area. A herd is defined as tiles of your type orthogonally connected within the same terrain. All scoring takes place at the end of the game, and for a standard area the largest herd scores four points while the second largest scores two points. The largest absolute area on the board scores triple this amount, and the largest in each of the other three land types (not including the absolute largest) scores double. Thus players are trying to build dominating herds in the largest spaces of each land type. It is likely that different areas in each type of land develop, and this can be advantageous. If a player is able to be alone in an area or control the largest and second largest herds there, they score all six, 12, or 24 points. As small areas pop up, it can be helpful to place a single tile there to stop this from happening and maybe even getting a cheap second place, though this is less likely in a four-player game. The blocked-off areas can be used strategically to cut off a player\'s herd growth, and can also be penalizing if you get trapped by one. With two joker sides on the dice every terrain type has a 50% chance per die. As a result, it is rare for the terrain type constraint to be harmful through the game but on any given turn it can be. This is especially true when a single space is needed to extend or cut off a herd. This makes the game less than a pure abstract and will make it more enjoyable for families to play. Still, the game shares ideas with other games from Knizia and others but it is the simplicity of the play and the clever scoring detail that makes it a game worth playing and owning. The rules fit on a single page and they are available in multiple languages. The rules also include a full-page scoring example and this clarifies the printed rules nicely. This is a strong addition to the growing Face2Face lineup.
