Board Game, 2 Players by Fantasy Flight Games Battlelore is a game that bridges several genres, combining various elements and aspects of cards, miniatures, role-playing and board games, without being easily pigeonholed in any category. Epic in scope (the game recreates massive clashes between medieval armies rather than small skirmishes between a handful of heroes), the game plays quickly, with a typical adventure rarely lasting more than an hour. Deep and engaging, the game is easily set up - and packed away - nonetheless. It plays on a board map easily laid down on any table, or even on the ground, and uses pre-assembled, ready to play miniatures. As such, it is neither a role-playing game, nor a tabletop miniature game. As the foundation to a comprehensive game system, Battlelore can be as addictive as any hobby. The game system lends itself to expansions and house rules, both officially sanctioned and home-made. Yet it is not, nor will it ever be, a randomized, blind-boosters collectable card game or collectable miniature game. Inside the Battlelore box, you will discover: * Over 210 incredibly sculpted miniatures, 20 mm in scale, detailing the various units you will get to command on the battlefield; From Dwarven crossbowmen to Hobgoblin lizard riders, 14 different sculpts and 58 Banner Bearers are included. All miniatures come pre-assembled, complete with their banners and ready to play, all packaged in two convenient, reusable plastic blister trays. No fingers rubbed raw from wrenching plastic from sprues or hours of delicate sticker positioning required! * An 80 page soft-cover, bound rulebook: Lavishly illustrated and chockfull of examples, this book contains all you will need to easily learn the game and start playing. Organized in three parts, covering the game’s basic medieval mechanics, fantasy aspects and the world - the rulebook lays the ground for a complete game system, and sets the foundation for many adventures to come. It also includes an all-important lexicon where all of the game’s key terms and concepts are defined. * A 24 page Adventures Booklet, The Veritable Chronicles of Jehan Froissart. This booklet will give you a glimpse of Battlelore’s late medieval Uchronia in the company of one of its greatest chroniclers, and guide you through a 10 Adventure, step-by-step introduction to the game’s mechanics. * A 3-fold full-colour board map of the battlefield, along with all the terrain and landmark pieces required to travel the width and depth of Medieval Europe’s battlefields. Like the War Council tokens and all other cardboard pieces in Battlelore, these come already prepunched and ready to play. * 2 War Council sheets, and the Lore Master tokens required to sit these important advisors at your side before the game starts. * The Command cards, Summary cards and Battle dice required to play the game, and an all-important 60 card Lore deck, including fifteen of each Lore Master’s most common set of tricks, spells and legendary actions. * A Web Access Number that opens the doors to a vibrant community of players, countless additional adventures, and even free access to Days of Wonder’s Online Adventure Editor! ++++++++++++++++++++ Counter magazine review ++++++++++++++++++++ 2 players (or teams), 30-45 minutes designed by Richard Borg reviewed by Greg Schloesser It should come as no surprise that the game system pioneered by Richard Borg in Battle Cry, which was released by Hasbro / Avalon Hill back in 2000, has been adapted to cover a variety of other historical time periods. The first sequel was Memoir \'44, which dealt with the European theatre of WWII from the point of the Normandy invasion. Ancient battles were covered in Commands and Colors: Ancients. Many were expecting the next release to deal with another period of military conflict, such as battles that occurred during the Napoleonic wars. Surprise! The next installment in the series has whisked us away to a fantasy land populated by knights, goblins, dwarves, wizards and fearsome creatures. BattleLore, released by Days of Wonder, uses the same core concepts found in the three previous titles, but also adds a layer of magic, represented by ``lore\'\' and powerful war councils. Players can wage epic battles in a variety of settings and with a wide assortment of races and creatures, all in less than an hour. Further, Days of Wonder promises to keep the system fresh by the steady release of expansions and new scenarios. BattleLore is practically spilling forth its contents, as the four-inch thick box barely contains the over 200 detailed miniatures, game boards and other accessories. Secure one of the new creatures and you\'ll be hard-pressed to cram everything back inside. This is one of those rare instances where a bigger box would have been a better choice. An imminent casualty of this tight situation will be the plastic inserts, whose
