34.5\' x 48\' Water-soluble overhead-projection pens work well with the mats. Black, blue, and green colors are the best regarding being removed with water. Red has a tendency of staining much more than the other colors so it is best used for highlighting only. Never use dry erase, permanent, or grease-pencil markers. The vinyl is too porous for the lines created from them to be able to be removed. If you have any doubt of the suitability of any particular marker, draw a small line on the border, let sit for awhile, and see how well it can be removed. Better to have a small permanent blemish on the edge of the mat than a permanent map drawn on the entirety of the mat! These industry standard play aids were first introduced in 1981 and their usefulness is recognized in the 3rd Edition D&D rules for adjudicating range, position and movementin combat situations. They are made of durable expanded vinyl, which rolls-up easily for travel yet lies flat for gameplay. They provide a smooth, padded surface, which protects both miniatures and dice. Layouts and tactical maps can be drawn directly onto the surface with water-based overhead projector pens and then simply cleaned off with a damp cloth.
