Advanced Squad Leader Rulebook 2nd Edition

ASL The premier game system of tactical-level World War II combat uniquely combines soundness of design with attention to detail and ease of play. Built on the popular Squad Leader system, ASL has long been the ultimate in tactical wargaming. Now, ASL has just gotten better with the introduction of the ASL RULES 2nd Edition. Not only are the Rules back in full color, but the 2nd Edition also benefits from all the fine-tuning accumulated over the past 15 years. The 2nd Edition also contains material not previously included in the basic Rules, such as: more examples of play throughout, the advanced rules of Chapter E (night, weather, boats, planes, skis, convoys, etc.), the beginner's Training Manual in Chapter K, an expanded Index, and widely-acclaimed playing aids such as the Offboard Artillery Player's Aid and the Overrun Flowchart.Each chapter is in a larger font for ease of reading.

And all without changing how this great game is played. The fruits of 15 years of "playtesting" can be seen here in the ASL RULES 2nd Edition which incorporates all previous errata and questions & answers. Great care has been taken to clear up ambiguities in the rules while keeping the game the same.

Although the ASL RULES 2nd Edition is not a complete game by itself, when combined with its add-on modules it allows the armchair warrior to simulate practically any small-unit action from 1935-1945, opening the gateway to hundreds of unique battles spanning the globe. Combined with the Beyond Valor game module, for instance, the Rules allow you to simulate battles between Finns, Germans, Russians, and partisans from 1939 to the capture of Berlin. Furthermore, ASL's "Design Your Own" system helps you create "what-if" battles with forces and terrain of your own choosing. The Chapter H notes on vehicles and ordnance (German and Russian notes are included) are one of the best single sources of information on the armor, vehicles, and guns actually used in battle in World War II. Other game modules separately available bring you the complete orders of battle for U.S. Army and Marines, British, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, and French forces, as well as the Minor nations that fought with the Allies or the Axis.

ASL Starter Kit #2 is a self-contained module which will let players start playing Advanced Squad Leader almost immediately. A liberally-illustrated rulebook teaches gamers ASL using a conversational style to teach the concepts of ASL. If you own and play ASL Starter Kit #1 you will be plesantly surprised to find how easy it is to spot the new rules ASLSK#2 adds - we've highlighted the new rules so that you can skip rereading what you've learned in ASLSK#1 and get right to the new rules!

What does ASLSK#2 add? GUNS! Artillery pieces. Anti-tank guns. The famous and deadly German "88". Mortars and bazookas! ASLSK#2 adds the "to hit" procedure to the foundation you learned in ASLSK#1. And if you didn't get ASLSK#1? There are two "infantry only" scenarios to get you up to speed!

This answers the inevitable question we get with the Starter Kit concept. Do I need ASLSK#2 if I have ASLSK#1? The Starter Kits are self contained. Each has everything you need to play what's in the box, with the higher numbers adding to the ASL knowledge you'll have from playing previous Starter Kits. We do not anticipate changing what you've learned from prior Starter Kits (for example, ASLSK#2 adds about 4 pages of rules to the base built by ASLSK#1). A better question would be "Do I need ASLSK#1 if I buy ASLSK#2?". The short answer is a resounding no! You can dive right in with ASLSK#2. But if you do, and you like the game, ASLSK#1 adds more boards and scenarios (infantry only) for you to enjoy. We know it's a little confusing, we hope this clears it up a bit.

December 1942: Having already surrounded the German 6th Army at Stalingrad, the Red Army launches its most ambitious offensive to date, Operation Little Saturn, designed to cut off and destroy all Axis armies in southern Russia. The first target of Saturn's fury is the Italian 8th Army, stretched across a thin defensive line along the frozen Don River. Two full Soviet Armies with hundreds of tanks launch themselves at the Italian positions. After several days of fighting, they achieve a breakthrough, which they rush to exploit. Encircled remnants of two corps of the Italian 8th Army embark upon a desperate trek to escape the encirclement.

To the north, the Italian Alpini Corps, consisting of the best troops of the Italian Army, a match for the troops of any nation, stand firm, resisting numerous Soviet attacks. Unfortunately, in January, a second Soviet offensive against the Hungarian 2nd Army to the Italian north breaks through the Hungarian lines. With breakthroughs to their north and south, the valiant Alpini are surrounded and they too must retreat to avoid destruction.

So begins the most desperate struggle faced by the Italian Army as the Alpini and other Italian formations march through the frozen wastelands wtihout food, without supplies, and surrounded by thousands of hostile troops. To stop marching is to die; the only chance of salvation is to keep moving and kill any Soviet troops who stand in their way. Of the tens of thousands of Italian troops who embarked on this desperate struggle for survival . . . only a few returned.
